Tearfund Legacy – Looking back over the last 50 years
Tearfund’s Christmas Appeal is traditionally the biggest and most successful of the year. As we’d hoped, the 2019 appeal surpassed all targets, bringing in urgently needed donations for the charity.
What
When the Tearfund’s Christmas Appeal went out, an estimated 2.7 million Nigerians had fled violence in the north east of the country. In total, around 7 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance – more than half of them were children.
Tearfund’s Christmas Appeal aimed to draw much-needed attention to the unfolding tragedy and gain support at a time when many other crises were in the public eye.
Donations would empower people in Nigeria to start rebuilding their lives, and give them access to the trauma healing they needed to forgive those who caused their suffering.
How
For Tearfund supporters, the case study echoed the Christmas story, revolving around a woman who was forced to flee her home with her family to stay alive. In this case, the woman was named Sarah, who had taken refuge in a camp run by Tearfund’s partner, RURCON. The appeal included an authentic word-for-word account, told through a handwritten letter from Sarah.
The appeal helped the reader feel they had stepped inside Sarah’s world, enabling them to identify with this brave woman who had become a survivor, thanks in part to their support. To strengthen involvement, we included a returnable Christmas card so the reader could write a personal message of encouragement to staff working in the displacement camps. This would then be sent in time to be received by Christmas Day.
